He further noted that it could even come as early as 2024 “if we’re lucky.” Musk previously said his goal is to establish a ‘self-sufficient city on Mars’ as soon as possible.

The topic of cryptocurrency driving the economy of Mars was briefly raised on Twitter last week. AI researcher Lex Fridman tweeted, “Mars economy runs on crypto.” In response, Twitter manager Elon’s World suggested, “Marscoin.” Musk himself replied with just a “Yes”.

It’s not clear whether Musk was referring to the cryptocurrency called “marscoin” that launched in 2014 or whether he was just talking about a future project of the same name. According to the project page, the existing project was launched with the aim of becoming a currency of Mars. The code was a Litecoin fork and originally traded on Nova Exchange. However, after peaking during the 2017 ICO bubble, the price fell sharply and the coin was dropped from Nova shortly after. In addition, Nova Exchange officially closed on January 28th.

Musk has also recently talked about two other significantly more popular cryptocurrencies: bitcoin and dogecoin.
